A global phylogeny of leafmining Ectoedemia moths (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae): exploring host plant family shifts and allopatry as drivers of speciation Naturalis

Background: Host association patterns in Ectoedemia (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) are also encountered in other insect groups with intimate plant relationships, including a high degree of monophagy, a preference for ecologically dominant plant families (e.g. Fagaceae, Rosaceae, Salicaceae, and Betulaceae) and a tendency for related insect species to feed on related host plant species. The evolutionary processes underlying these patterns are only partly understood, we therefore assessed the role of allopatry and host plant family shifts in speciation within Ectoedemia. A Linnaeus NGTM interactive key to the Lithocolletinae of North-West Europe aimed at accelerating the accumulation of reliable biodiversity data (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae) Naturalis

We present an interactive key that is available online through any web browser without the need to install any additional software, making it an easily accessible tool for the larger public. The key can be found at http://identify.naturalis.nl/lithocolletinae. The key includes all 86 North-West European Lithocolletinae, a subfamily of smaller moths (“micro-moths”) that is commonly not treated in field guides. The user can input data on several external morphological character systems in addition to distribution, host plant and even characteristics of the larval feeding traces to reach an identification. A new leafminer on grapevine and Rhoicissus (Vitaceae) in South Africa within an expanded generic concept of Holocacista (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Heliozelidae) Naturalis

A grapevine leafminer found recently in table grape orchards and vineyards in the Paarl region (Western Cape, South Africa) is described as Holocacista capensis sp. n. It has also been found on native Rhoicissus digitata and bred on that species in the laboratory. It is closely related to Holocacista salutans (Meyrick, 1921), comb. n. (from Antispila), described from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, but widespread in southern Africa and a native leafminer of various Vitaceae: Rhoicissus tomentosa, R. digitata, R. tridentata and Cissus cornifolia. Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera) in China, 1. Introduction and Stigmella Schrank feeding on Fagaceae Naturalis

The Stigmella species feeding on Fagaceae collected in China in 1984 are described and all known East Asian species are reviewed. In total 13 species are recognized: 12 are tentatively grouped in the ruficapitella-group and one in the caesurifasciella-group. The ruficapitella-group includes here also the castanopsiella-group and the suberivora-group. Stigmella kao, S. circumargentea, S. vandrieli and S. lithocarpella are described as new species from Yunnan and S. fumida Kemperman & Wilkinson is also reported from Yunnan. From Heilongjiang four species are reported: S. omelkoi Puplesis, S. fervida Puplesis (on basis of mines only), S. dentatae Puplesis and S. aladina Puplesis. Review of the subgenus Trifurcula (Levarchama), with two new species (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis

The subgenus Trifurcula (Levarchama) is reviewed. It comprises seven species, two of which are described as new: Trifurcula (Levarchama) peloponnesica VAN NIEUKERKEN sp. n., found in Greece: Peloponnesus and feeding on Anthyllis hermanniae, and Trifurcula (Levarchama) manygoza VAN NIEUKERKEN, A. LAŠTŮVKA et Z. LAŠTŮVKA sp. n., from Croatia and northern Greece, feeding on Lotus corniculatus. The subgenus occurs throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, and all species make leafmines on Fabaceae: Loteae. All species are diagnosed and biology and distribution are discussed, including new hostplant and distributional records.
